Battery Storage offers a great solution to the long standing issues of intermittent generation from renewable sources but it isn’t optimised out of the box. With a typical project life of 10 years they have a limited window in which to generate as much revenue in complement to asset owners existing portfolios and infrastructure. Often co-located with PV or Wind to make use of the connection and land already in situ, BESS can be a great compliment to any generation type when implemented in the right way. 

Whilst co-location of BESS with PV and Wind offer a number of benefits it also poses some challenges to these fundamentally different generation types. With one shared point of connection (POC) it is important to optimise what is happening depending on the: weather, grid, spot and ancilliary services market. When you potentially have multiple different OEMs for your different generation types they don’t always communicate with each other in the best way. An engineer visiting site may be confronted with a different HMI at every site which requires heavy adminsitration and training from a standarisation perspective. 

Through offering one manufacturer’s controller interface at every generation type and a power park controller (PPC) it ensures that not only does the engineer know what to expect and is familiar with the system but they all communicate with each other seamlessly in the fastest response times. From a development and integration perspective it is also far easier having to deal with one agile company rather than multiple large OEMs which typically don’t have a controller specialism in other generation types.

Case Study: 100MWh BESS and Frequency Support

This project called for the integration of Tesla Megapak hardware, grid compliance and an optimised trading schedule. We installed 10 IO racks for the MV switchgear on what was to be the largest energy storage project at the time. The BESS comprised by 40 Li Ion batteries to support the grid in an area of high renewables penetration and we offered a 10-year warranty to be in line with the entire project life. We were able to leverage our expertise from solar and hybrid load management to develop a site controller and demonstrate compliance to Elia Grid Codes.
