OEM Approved Slip Rings for wind turbines

Slip rings allow power and signal to be passed through rotating parts. In wind turbines slip rings are used to supply power and signal to the pitch system through the main shaft. They are also used to carry power off the generator from the 1500 rpm rotating part to the bus bars and then down-tower for power conditioning. A critical component for wind turbines as failure results in loss of communication to the turbine in the event of pitch slip ring failure. Or the event of generator slip ring failure this can result in thermal events (fires). Quality manufacture of slip rings and proper maintenance practices are key to good operating practices.

BGB offer OEM approved designs combined with feedback from the field to improve performance, circularity and reduce downtime.

What is circular design?

Circular design takes into consideration the entire component life cycle and is optimised for longevity, repair and environmental impact rather than cost. This is closer to the philosophy of wind where wind turbines are design to last 30-35 years and make a positive contribution to the planet. By designing components that use environmental friendly materials in a modular way, this allows structural elements to be reused and consumable parts (brushes, rings, seals) to be changed. This design approach keeps the maximum amount of materials in circulation for as long as possible and typically components can be disassembled in the opposite order they were assembled.
